Hot Hot Heat

Today I dragged Michael out to Lawrence, KS to go look at fabric. And I didn't really have to drag him. He willingly drove over an hour on the hottest day of the year to spend $20.00 on burgers and fries at local burger and then go to Sarah's fabrics so we could scout out fabric for the little bird's room.
I'm shocked that I get him.
I'm also shocked that we found some fabric that we like - for now. We decided to hold off getting anything until September when we find out if we will be bringing home Eleanor or Henry/Finnegan/Oliver/Jonah/Zorro/Beauregard. It was also nice to see what kind of things Michael envisions for the room.
Upon returning home - covered in sweat and utterly exhausted we crawled into bed and took a nap. Aside from a quick trip to the grocery store, I have been unable to do much else. The heat and the growing a person has taken it out of me.
I think I'll wait for it to cool off before asking to be taken on any more excursions.

About this time of year

I start complaining about how hot it is and wondering why it can't be in the 60's and 70's all the time. Well this year (aside from a few days of "normal" weather) it has been.
Aside from being a little bothered by it because it is so abnormal - I am enjoying the wonderful weather. The AC is off, the garden looks great and I really just enjoy sitting outside with a good book. So much better then days of 100 degrees!

The Taste of Summer

I'd forgotten how much I love watermelon. Today at the store I felt the urge to buy a giant quarter of one. When I got it home I immediately hacked off I giant wedge and began eating it over the sink - spitting the seeds into a little bowl and letting the sweet syrup flow. It was so good.

It tasted like summer, like riding my bike through giant puddles after a summer storm had cooled the air, like catching fireflies and climbing trees.

Prelude to Summer

Bleck, it this what we have to look forward to? No thanks!
It's nearly 6:00pm and it is just now cooling off. And cooling off is relative.

Blog style

Once upon time this was a crafting/cooking/things I do blog, but as it does every summer it has turned into a whining about life blog. Partly because during the summer months I craft and cook very little and spend most of my time fretting about work. Last night was the last Walk for PKD of the 2007 season and I thought that this would mean a full nights sleep. Nope I popped awake at 3:00am fretting about work - work things that are already over!
I think it's going to take some time to wind down.

And in my attempt to progress the unwinding I am going to:
a) Work on my red scarf for the red scarf project. Its due in less then a month and I have about 1/3 finished.
b) Actually meal plan. I was inspired and a bit jealous as a friend explained her weekly meal planning and using her freezer for more then just holding frozen pizza.
c) Clean house - Michael is fabulous and super helpful around the house, but there are some jobs that are mine...jobs I have neglected. So I'll be picking up that slack today.
d) Finishing the 2nd baby quilt. The baby was due Friday, so I should really have this finished.
e) Sit in the sun porch and read.

What away to unwind.

Temperature Drop

Over the past few days the temperature has dropped more then ten degrees. It feels like its dropped closer to 20. Its lovely.
We've opened the window and started up the attic fan and let the great, cool, slightly thunderstorm-y air blow in. Even though it is still August, for this morning I can imagine it is Autumn.

Home Again, Again

This time its home to my little yellow house.
No matter how lovely the trip, or nice the company, finally walking through your own door is delightful. I'm a Cancer - a home body and this body couldn't be happier to be heading to her own shower and bed.

Heat Wave

We're having a heat wave.
A na-as-ty heat wave!
I hate the heat wave!

Seriously it's nasty hot out there. And as we are in Kansas City we have the addition of a super kind of humidity that makes it that much more miserable.

We are trying to keep the house cool without burning up the AC - what do people without Central Air do?

The Early Show

I was up this morning at 3:30am in order to meet a group of volunteer to promote the Walk for PKD at a taping of the CBS Early Show. While you can't see me in this clip you can see other teal wearing, PKD fighting, super awesome people (I was in the back with Katie holding a sign).

It was a very early morning, but great because we helped to spread the word about PKD! Speaking of PKD, now is the time to sign up for the Walk for PKD! Support me in my efforts or sign-up in your area. Beware a whole "Why I Walk" post is just around the corner!

Where has the summer gone?

It’s already the second week of August. Seriously, how? Next week I’ll be headed to Denver with rest of the Persons’ women. Then the summer will really be over.
How can this be? None of my summer projects were accomplished. The 2 year quilt is still unfinished, the garden is not looking good and most of this is still just a messy yard with no real garden boundaries. We have such great plans – a patio with beautiful flowers and yummy veggies growing all around it. Instead I have one plot of herbs and a pot with one lone pepper – Pepe – who is finally starting to turn red.
Hopefully this fall we will be able to put in the garden and the patio. Here’s hoping the autumn will go slowly – much slower than this summer.
